Shelby Foote was characterized as
a "novelist who found his voice as
an epic historian" in his monumental
The Civil War: A Narrative. (New York Times, July 3, 2005). He became popularly known following his appearances on the Ken Burns
Civil War documentary first shown on television in 1990. Mr. Foote died in Memphis, where he had lived since the mid-1950s, on June 27, 2005.
Dr. Douglas Cupples is a member of the History Department at The University of Memphis. A Civil War historian, Dr. Cupples specializes in the Southern home front during
the War. He had many professional
contacts and personal conversations
with Shelby Foote over the years.
