The Irish in Memphis

A Public Lecture by

Dr. John Harkins, PhD


McWherter Library, Room 226

Dr. Harkins, a native of Memphis, is of Irish descent. He received his BS and PhD in history from The University of Memphis, and his MA from LSU. He is the author of numerous articles, as well as the book Metropolis of the American Nile: Memphis and Shelby County and the president of the West Tennessee Historical Society and head of the History Department of the upper school at Memphis University School. Dr. Harkins has taught courses at many of the local colleges and universities.

Dr. John Harkins will talk about the history, experiences, accomplishments, and contributions of the Irish in Memphis, from the American Revolution to Memphis in May 2005. Hear about such major shapers of 19th century Memphis as Paddy Meagher, Eugene Magevney, John Park, and Pappy Hadden, as well as the numerous Crump functionaries of the 20th century who had Irish roots.

The public is invited to attend this free lecture.
