G. Wayne Dowdy will discuss how former Memphis Mayor and Congressman, Mr. Edward Hull "Boss" Crump, his political machine, and the city of Memphis benefited from Federal programs during World War II; what they had to do to get the programs; and how it all changed Memphis.
Mr. Dowdy is an archivist for the Memphis Public Library and Information Center's History Department, where he recently processed the E.H. Crump Collection. Mr.
Dowdy holds an M.A. in History from the University of Arkansas and is the author of several articles on 20th century Memphis history in the West Tennessee Historical Society Papers and the Tennessee Historical Quarterly.
