Elizabeth A. Meriwether
From Elizabeth Meriwether, Recollections of 92 Years 1824-1916

Maj. Minor Meriwether
From The Old Guard in Gray by Capt. Harvey Mathes, 1899

Elizabeth Avery Meriwether and her husband Minor, were remarkable Memphians. She was a novelist, journalist, public speaker, and a strong and vocal women's suffrage advocate; he was highly successful first as an engineer and then as a lawyer. During the Civil War, while he served in the Confederate Army, she was expelled from Memphis by William T. Sherman and raised three young sons as a refugee in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Her late-life memoir, Recollections of 92 Years, is a minor classic. The Meriwether Family Papers are owned by the West Tennessee Historical Society and housed in the Mississippi Valley Collection, at the University of Memphis.

The public is encouraged to attend this free program.
