In this presentation Mr. Frank will present a "worm's eye view" of the United States' great 19th-century cataclysm, the American Civil War. Using excerpts from the many sets of letters and journals held in the Mississippi Valley Collection, Mr. Frank will show how the events of 1860-1865 appeared to some of the people -- soldiers and civilians -- who lived and suffered in that period of revolutionary change. How did they interpret the issues? How did they see themselves? How did they see their enemies? Mr. Frank will allow these people to speak for themselves on such universal themes as loyalty, identity, battle, imprisonment, occupation, hunger, hardship, death, and loss.
Edwin Frank is a historian and popular speaker on topics emanating from the culture and history of the Mississippi Valley region of the nation.
The public is encouraged to attend this free program. Refreshments served. Parking available.
