Position: Head, Cataloging Department
Responsibilities: This position provides leadership and direction for the operation and maintenance
of the services and resources of the Libraries' Cataloging Department. His/her responsibilities include
planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services that facilitate user access to the collections and
resources of the library and enhance the integrity of the bibliographic database. He/she supervises departmental faculty and staff and establishes departmental goals and objectives in keeping with those of the University Libraries. He/she provides leadership in resource and budget management for the department. As a faculty member, he/she participates in the collection development program, serves as subject liaison to assigned department(s), and participates in staffing the public service desk.
Reporting Structure: Reports to the Dean of University Libraries
Rank and Salary: Tenure Track, 12 month appointment. Salary minimum: $50,000 per year. Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor depending on qualifications.
Benefits: 24 days vacation/12 days sick leave per year; state paid retirement (State of Tennessee or TIAA- CREF); group health insurance; tuition remission.
Required Qualifications: ALA-accredited MLS degree. Second graduate degree is required to be eligible for tenure and promotion. At least one year of post-MLS work experience in a library. Must be forward thinking and self-motivated. Strong knowledge of the principles and practices of cataloging, including nationally accepted rules and standards such as AACR2R, LCRI, LCSH, MARC formats and LC Classification. Experience using the OCLC system and an automated integrated library system. Good oral and written communication skills and ability to solve problems. Must have good interpersonal skills and demonstrate a commitment to public service. Good attention to detail. Must be able to assume responsibility and accomplish goals with little or no supervision working independently as well as a part of a team. Ability to work effectively with a highly diverse group of faculty, staff, students, public and coworkers in a courteous and professional manner. Evidence of potential to maintain an ongoing program of professional involvement, development and productivity at a level that would merit tenure and promotion.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in cataloging in an academic library. Experience leading a cataloging department. Experience providing user services. Subject expertise in a scientific or technical discipline.
