LAPTOP GUIDELINES

The University libraries has ten laptops with wireless capability available for U of M students only. Students can checkout these laptops at the McWherter Library Circulation Desk. These laptops are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The library, the circulation desk nor the systems department is responsible for loss of data due to malfunction of the equipment or user error.

The following statements apply to my laptop checkout privilege:

Policy for Acceptable Use of Information Technology Resources

  1. The check out period for this laptop is 2 hours.
  2. You are responsible for the laptop and its accessories while it is checked out to you.
  3. You must have a UUID and PH password to log on.
  4. You must save data on UM drive to avoid automatic deletion.
  5. This laptop must never be left unattended.
  6. If the laptop is not returned to the circulation desk on time, you will be responsible for overdue fines at the rate of $10.00 per hour.
  7. You are responsible for replacement costs ($2,000.00) if the laptop is lost, stolen or damaged in any way while checked out to you. Your grades will be held, transcripts denied, registration blocked until this debt is settled.
  8. If caught participating in any criminal acts while using this laptop, the Campus Police will be notified and the equipment will be immediately confiscated.
  9. Laptop must be returned 30 minutes prior to library closing to avoid penalty. Please hand it to a staff person at the Circulation desk. Do not put the laptop in a book drop or leave in on the counter.
  10. You may renew the laptop as long as no one else is waiting. You may not check out a laptop 30 minutes prior to closing.
  11. Please do not remove any library stickers, labeling, etc.
  12. The library does not provide headsets or other accessories. You may attach your own accessories, if desired; however, if they cause damage to the laptop, you will be responsible for covering the cost of repair or replacement.

Users of this laptop are expected to abide by all above stipulations including the following copyright law and University procedure:

"The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 United States Code) governs the reproduction, distribution, adaptation, public performance and public display of any copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in law, non-profit libraries are authorized to lend, lease or rent copies of computer programs to patrons on a nonprofit basis and for nonprofit purposes. Any person who makes an unauthorized copy or adaptation of the computer program, or redistributes the loan copy, or publicly performs or displays the computer program, except as permitted by the Title 17 of the United States Code, may be liable to copyright infringement."
