Importing Pre-Existing Bibliographies into RefWorks
References imported into RefWorks must be in certain forms that will allow RefWorks to sort the bibliographic elements into the proper fields of the database. Generally, this means that bibliographies in ordinary word-processing formats or untagged plain text cannot be loaded; there is nothing in them that RefWorks can use.
However, there is a work-around provided you are comfortable with the technology. Convert bibliographies from web pages, Word, WordPerfect, etc., into Bibtex. Bibtex is compatible with Refworks and can be imported.
MakeBib, a text-to-BibTeX converter, is listed below; as more such converters are found, they will be included on this page.
MakeBib
With MakeBib, copy-and-paste your reference(s) into the empty input box. References should be separated by an empty line ("two newlines" as in the instructions; or two hard returns). You may have to edit the pasted-in material. If your are copying a bibliography from the web, be sure to edit out any extraneous material such as linking icons. Then click "Make BibTeX Source."
The BibTeX file appears on a new page. As the page includes some instructions, you should copy-and-paste the formatted bibliography into Word, but be sure to save the document as plain txt (.txt).
Go to RefWorks and choose References/Import. For your import filter, choose BibTex; use "multiple databases" for the database name.
Be Aware: Only minimal bibliographic data can be reliably imported using this method.
