Welcome

to the land of blues and soul and rock 'n' roll and W. C. Handy and Elvis and Al Green and Jerry Lee and barbecue and . . .

SEMLA's 35th birthday bash will be held in Memphis, October 27-29, 2006. The conference hotel is the Double Tree in downtown Memphis, and our opening reception will be held there. Program sessions will be held at The Center for Southern Folklore nearby and will include presentations on the Center's collections, the historic all-black radio station WDIA, the collections of the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, and a look at current trends in Memphis music.

Participants will be able to choose tours from the list of sites to be covered in the MLA tours for the February conference. Possibilities include: Sun Studio, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum, Graceland, and the National Civil Rights Museum. Other individual choices might include some of the other museums in the city: the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, or the University of Memphis Art Museum with its superb Egyptology collection. Check the Memphis Info link at the left for more information about Memphis attractions.
