I. Books & Audiovisuals

Use tomCat (the U of M Library catalog).

When searching by subject, use valid Library of Congress Subject Headings such as education, higher or educational leadership or high school teachers. (LC Subject Headings volumes are available in Reference.) Also try searching by keywords; e.g. computers classroom or teachers peer review. (Leave out words like in, of, on, and the; AND is assumed between words). Find videotapes by using videorecording as a keyword; e.g., teaching videorecording Copy the call number from the catalog record to find the book. (See How to Find Books.)

netLibrary [UM Only] A collection of over 46,000 electronic books in various disciplines. Some of these items may be available in print as well as electronically.

II. Periodical Resources


A. Electronic Indexes and Full-Text Collections

Use an electronic database. These are recommended. Other periodical databases are listed on Periodical Databases by Adademic Area. For help finding articles try How to Find Articles in Periodicals and refer to How to find Print Periodicals for help locating the articles you've found. If the periodical is available electronically, you will find a link to it from the electronic journals list.

Education FullText, also part of Wilson Omnifile Mega (1983-)[UM Only]
Indexes an international range of English-language periodicals and books in the field of education, including 37 journals not included in ERIC.
Educator's Reference Desk [Open Access]
Find online resource guides, lesson plans, and links to online education information. Search GEM, the Gateway to Education Materials with 40,000 resources from federal, state, university, and other non-profit Internet sites.
ERIC (education journals, documents, 1966-) [UM Only]
Includes abstracts of journal articles, books, curriculi, conference papers, theses and dissertations.
JSTOR (full text archive) [UM Only]
Indexes and stores back issues of forty scholarly journals related to Education, including the Journal of Higher Education. JSTOR coverage typically begins with the first issue published and ends at the past five years (the JSTOR "rolling wall").
Junior Edition [UM Only]
A periodical database designed for students in junior high and middle school, with magazines, newspapers and reference books (most are full-text) for information on current events, the arts, science, popular culture, health, people, government, history, sports and more. Coverage: 2001-.
Kid's InfoBits [UM Only]
Database for elementary school students with a topic/icon-driven search interface. Covers over 100 full-text elementary appropriate children's magazines. Also includes 13 elementary reference titles. Coverage: varies.
Library Literature and Information Science FullText, also part of Wilson Omnifile Mega (1984-)[UM Only]
Indexes English and foreign language material in the field of library and information science. Includes journals--100 in fulltext--, books, pamphlets, proceedings.
Project Muse (1887 - ) [UM Only]
Full text archive of scholarly journals, includes 10 in the field of education. Covers the most recent 3-5 years.
PsycINFO (1887 - ) [UM Only]
Provides citations and abstracts to articles in over 1,300 journals, plus books and book chapters, and dissertations. Includes thesaurus of subject headings.
Social Science FullText, also part of Wilson Omnifile Mega (1984-)[UM Only]
Indexes materials in the social sciences. Includes citations and abstracts from the 80s, and selected full text from the mid-90s.
Sociological Abstracts (social sciences periodicals, 1983 - ; abstracts since 1994) [UM Only]
Indexes material in sociology and related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. Includes journal articles, books, conferences, dissertations. Coverage: 1963-; with abstracts, 1974-.

Electronic Journals Service (EJS) [UM Only]
Electronic journals service available through a common interface for online journal subscriptions. Search, browse, and identify journals and articles available online in either full-text or table-of-content format. Hyperlinks are provided to more than 1,300 electronic journals worldwide.
Expanded Academic Index (1980-) [UM Only]
Indexes about 1,900 magazines, journals, and the NY Times newspaper. Most have abstracts, and about 900 are full text.
IngentaConnect [Open Access]
Formerly Uncover. Browse the publication list or search tables of contents to over 17,000 periodicals; period of coverage varies. Provides document delivery service.
Lexis-Nexis Academic Universe [UM Only]
Provides full text of many magazines and newspapers, including The Commercial Appeal since 1990.
Oxford Reference Online [UM Only]
The Oxford Reference Online Premium collection is an online collection of dictionaries and encyclopedias in many fields including: art & architecture, bilingual dictionaries, biological science, classics, computing, earth & environmental sciences, economics & business, English dictionaries and thesauruses, English language reference, food & drink, history, law, literature, maps & illustrations, military history, mythology & folklore, names & places, performing arts, physical sciences & mathematics, politics & social sciences, quotations, religion & philosophy, and science.

Searches the 12 InfoTrac databases simultaneously.

WorldCat [UM Only]
Records of any type of material cataloged by OCLC member libraries, including books, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and websites. Contains manuscripts written as early as the 12th century.

V. Government Publications

The Government Publications Department on the first floor of McWherter Library is a designated depository for publications issued by the federal government and the state of Tennessee. It is a valuable resource for information related to educational studies and research. Staff in the department will assist you in finding and using sources that you need. You can also get information through their web page at http://exlibris.memphis.edu/resource/unclesam.html.

ERIC Home Page - Provides information about ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center), and links to their many products and services, including AskERIC, ERIC Digests, and the public version of the ERIC database.
AskA+ Locator - Digital reference, or "AskA", services are Internet-based question-and-answer services that connect users with experts and subject expertise. Digital reference services use the Internet to connect people with people who can answer questions and support the development of skills.
Busy Teachers' WebSite K-12 - This site, provided by Georgia Institute of Technology, is"a carefully annotated clearinghouse of materials for teachers who are new to the Internet."

Current Research (Dissertations and Theses) - At this site, you can (1) search citations and abstracts of dissertations and theses submitted by The University of Memphis, (2) view 24 page previews of dissertations and theses published after 1996, and (3) download the full text of dissertations and theses published after 1996 (if you are an authorized user from The University of Memphis then the downloaded copies are free).
