PubMed is an experimental program created by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (a part of NLM) which originally accessed only certain subject areas in MEDLINE. It now covers MEDLINE back to 1966 and PREMEDLINE (covering newly released articles which have yet to be fully indexed and checked for accuracy and included in MEDLINE). PubMed was developed so that once the search was done, and the citations and abstracts listed, the user could just click on the citation and be connected to the full text of the article at the appropriate publisher's web site. Access to the full text of these articles is based on agreements between publishers and NLM. Currently, there are only 24 journal titles with links to full text. This access to full text will usually require a fee or subscription.

A portal to the Web sites of a number of multi-agency health initiatives and activities of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other Federal departments and agencies.
